As China becomes the largest manufacturing country
of the world, the impacts to the economy of Japan, Taiwan,
and Singapore, etc. is dramatic. They have to change the fundamentals
of economy in order to achieve sustainability. It is today
widely recognized that achieving sustainability without the
use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions
will not be possible.
Economic progress, since the invention of the first tools,
has always depended on new ideas and innovation - - knowledge.
What is revolutionary now is our understanding of the process
of economic growth and the role of knowledge in it, and the
resources available to those whose job it is to apply knowledge
to economic issues. Knowledge is now recognized as being at
least as important as physical capital, financial capital
and natural resources as a source of economic growth. This
recent development challenges many of Asia companies and institutions
that were developed in times when knowledge was less important
as an economic asset.
There are two major underlying and inter-related forces that
are helping to shape this emerging economy. First, it is globalization.
Increasingly, economic activity is undertaken without reference
to international borders. Second is on communications, which
means the falling cost and rising efficiency in the transmission,
retrieval and analysis of information. Together, these forces
are creating a global economy in which knowledge is used pervasively
as both an input and an output.
This talk focuses on experience of managing the valuable
knowledge assets (structure data and non-structure text) of
an organization such as information on products, technologies,
solutions, customer experiences and competitors. Dr. Huang
will provide insight into issues of knowledge-centric businesses
transformation from his engagement experiences with Asian
companies (TaiPower, ITRI, etc.) including:
Enterprise
KM - Implementing KM strategies and projects in the fast-changing
world, including enterprise knowledge map and sector-specific
experiences of KM
Cultivating communities of practice and information ecologies
Human resources skill transformation - looking at individual
competencies, management issues, and matching with corporate
competency requirements
Tools and measurement - looking at the more technical side
of software, data mining and measurement as well as multi-lingual
knowledge issues based on knowledge database technology. In
particular, Dr. Huang will demonstrate the strength of Oracle
in knowledge base implementations and share their pros and
cons. Oracle is actually the main steak in the ground for
many corporations' success in implementing knowledge bases.
